Categories

Categories can be created to keep one page name from clashing with another. In this respect, categories are like MediaWiki namespaces, but better and more useful. Unfortunately, they are not much like traditional categories. Your best option for categories at the present time is to use tags instead.

Tags

Tags are words and phrases that, in theory, help your users find the content they are looking for easier. Tags are created for each page and then all of the tags can be displayed in almost any location of your wiki.
