You should welcome all new members to your wikis by giving them a place to introduce themselves. The most common place to welcome new members is an Introduction category in a forum. Here new members will post a bit about themselves and their interests. This is a great chance to not only make your new members feel welcome, but to strike up an interesting conversation as well.
In help wikis, the introduction section of the forum is commonly called "How may we help you?" which gives new members an invitation to ask their first question about the wiki subject and receive help quickly. The faster and better the help here is, the better chance that a new member will become a regular member.
Not all new members post in the introduction forum category. Some new members will post a topic of interest in the forum. If it is their first post, you should welcome them there.
