Three’s The Project embraces Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori by doing the whole show in te reo

Three’s The Project adopts Te Wiki O Te Reo Māori by doing its entire show in te reo on Friday.

The Project’s executive producer, Jon Bridges, says he wanted The Project team to step out of their comfort zone and do something different for this year’s Maori Language Week.

“It’s something we can do that’s going to be different and exciting and new and ideally capture the imagination of Aotearoa,” Bridges told Newshub.

The entire show will be in te reo but it will be subtitled in English for all who watch to enjoy.

“We want to make sure it’s accessible to the whole country because that’s the idea, we’re not excluding people,” Bridges told Newshub.

He said doing the show in te reo was to kiss the tongue and show support.

“We want to have fun and celebrate the language which is a real taonga for New Zealand.”

Project host Kanoa Lloyd said doing a whole show at te reo would be daunting, but it was something she was willing to try.

“One thing that has really helped me climb this mountain is thinking about my daughter and how I can help her connect to Reo Māori. Doing this show is a way for me to show her that she’s cool and her whakapapa and her tongue are cool,” Lloyd told Newshub.

Both Bridges and Lloyd said the team behind the show worked extremely hard to make the show entirely in te reo possible.
