Stranger of Paradise Trial Tips and Tricks

Stranger of Paradise is very similar to Dark Souls-style action-adventure games, sharing the closest resemblance to Team Ninja’s own Nioh and Nioh 2. Players will have to dodge, block, and fight their way through the enemies they face.

To start

  • The trial allows you to choose between Easy, Normal and Hard difficulty modes.
  • Controls can be custom reconfigured in settings. You can also choose to play the game with languages spoken in English or Japanese, as well as various text language options.
  • The broken pots around the world will provide little MP pickups that fill Jacks’ MP meter.
  • Interact with cubes, tutorial messages, loot, ladders, and doors by holding down the touchpad.
  • Cubes replenish your HP, MP, and potions, while also reviving any enemies killed and removing unclaimed items, very similar to bonfires in Dark Souls.
  • Explore different paths to find chests containing equipment to equip for your character.

  • Jack can charge an attack by holding R1. You can also use an improved guard by blocking with L1 in this state, to reduce the lag taken by the hits.
  • Holding R2 will increase the duration of the Spinning Slash movement.
  • Maintaining direction on the left stick while performing a normal attack will change the type of attack used. These vary from weapon to weapon, so try experimenting as you unlock a new weapon to learn the nuances.
  • Blocking with L1 just as you’re about to get hit will allow you to preserve your breakage gauge while blocking the hit.
  • If an ally is downed, you must either use one of your potions to get them back or complete the combat encounter for them to rise.
  • Your breakage gauge is slowly recovering. Switch to another battle set or step away from the fight for a moment to collect it so you don’t get stunned.
  • When you acquire another weapon / combat set, you have the option to switch between them on the fly by pressing Triangle. Each battle set has its own break gauge, so you can switch between them to keep yourself from getting broken in the middle of a battle.
  • Each equipped battle set earns labor points separately, so you can spend labor points in each skill tree without having to worry about saving them for the other.
  • While Soul Shielding effectively blocks opponents, it also leaves you vulnerable if you run out of time to block. If you find yourself getting hit a lot, try dodging X for standard attacks, as it doesn’t cost your Break Gauge anything to do so and can keep you out of harm’s way.

  • Open the main menu with the Options button to access tips, system settings, and character customization options. You can pause the game in this menu by pressing the touchpad.
  • Bombs will grow to the point that they will self-destruct if you hit them with enough fire. You can get fire as an instant ability by using Soul Shield on the bomb’s own fire attack. You can also use Mage Fire spells to have the same effect. Just move away from the explosion radius.

Menus and equipment

  • There are 3 types of weapons in the demo.
    • Swordfish
    • The club
    • spear
  • Each of these weapons offers a different combat experience and can be swapped out on the fly. The swordfish is a good all-rounder, the club is good for Magic damage and Break Gauge, and the spear is good for ranged attacks.
  • Open the main menu with the Options button to access tips, system settings, and character customization options. You can pause the game in this menu by pressing the touchpad.
  • When you unlock a new ability in the task tree menu, press X on that ability again to go directly to the gear menu in combat settings and equip your new ability.

  • Pressing L3 in the Combat Settings menu will automatically equip the most optimal combination of weapons and armor for your character.
  • Use the cube’s “Edit Preset” feature to create loadouts that you can swap on any cube. This allows you to have more than the two standard battle sets Jack can equip at the same time.
  • Weapons and armor can have an affinity with work, which increases Jack’s stats when equipped with the corresponding work.
  • If you raise the level of a single Job enough, you can unlock the Advanced version of a Job. These advanced jobs have alternate ability attacks and can equip a wider variety of weapons, allowing you to create a more versatile battle set.

With these tips in hand, you should be in a good position to take this trial version and see which different mechanics you prefer. That being said, you can also check out our Shrine of Chaos – Trial Walkthrough for a breakdown of all that this level has to offer.
