After two years and a bit, the long-awaited multiplayer mod for Skyrim is out and sort of working. Good, a Skyrim’s multiplayer mod is out, anyway. Is Together Reborn the same project as Together? It’s getting a little confusing, honestly.
Maybe a bit of history as an explanation will help clear things up.
Skyrim Together was originally an effort by a team of modders to create a multiplayer Skyrim mod. The team started working on the mod in the 2010s and a playable beta version was released in 2019. But the main reason it was notable, besides being Skyrim multiplayer, was the amount of money players developers were earning via Patreon. At the height of Skyrim Together’s popularity, the team earned $25,000 a month from donations. This was before the idea of paying for mods was taken seriously.
Then, as tends to happen, controversy erupted. The developers of Skyrim Together have found themselves embroiled in accusations of stealing code. Skyrim Together’s code, at the time, used large amounts of code directly from Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE).
It turns out Skyrim Together lead developer Yamashi used to steal Skyrim Script Extender, and the dispute ended with developer SKSE banning Yamashi from using SKSE assets in his own projects.
Then the team and the project kind of imploded. Accusations between team members started flying, lies were told, lies were reported, receipts were provided, and the eventual full release of the mod seemed to be in jeopardy.
So… Skyrim: Reborn together?
So here is. Skyrim: Together Reborn has officially been released in beta. It’s a Skyrim multiplayer mod created by a team of volunteers almost entirely different from the team that created Skyrim Together.
The team doesn’t make $25,000 a month in donations. In fact, according to the project wiki, the team doesn’t take any donations. Although this may change in the future. The Reborn project appears to be completely separate from the original project, save for the branding. And the reddit page. And the Discord server.
Oh, and the purpose of a multiplayer Skyrim.
The good part of Project Reborn is that it’s playable right now. The mod is out, albeit in beta form, and contains expected bugs. It crashes and has some graphical issues. Some players have suggested oddly specific steps to take to perhaps ensure a smoother experience.
But he works.
Apart from the story, a mod available now allows you to play Skyrim online with other people. Which, in the end, is all people really want.
