The sad news of his disappearance was confirmed by the Metro Nashville Police Department on Twitter. Authorities wrote: ‘No foul play is evident in today’s death of actress Shonka Dukureh, 44, who played Big Mama Thornton in this year’s Elvis film.

Fisk Univ graduate Dukureh was found dead in the bedroom of her Kothe Way flat which she shared with her 2 young children.

According to a report by The Tennessean, Dukureh was found unresponsive on Thursday morning July 21 by one of her children who went to a neighbor’s house for help. Apparently, the neighbor called 911 around 9:27 a.m. local time. The cause of his death is still unknown.

Nashville Mayor John Cooper took to his Twitter account to share his condolences with the Dukureh family.

He wrote: “My deepest condolences to the family of Shonka Dukureh. Shonka graduated from @Fisk1866 and made Nashville her home for many years. His powerful voice and artistry will live on through his music, and we honor his memory on this sad day.”

Shonka fans are heartbroken after hearing the tragic news of her death. One user took to her Twitter and wrote: ‘Rest in peace Shonka Dukureh you were an amazing singer and actress.

According to The Tennessean, Shonka was in Charlotte, North Carolina, but later moved to Nashville.

The 44-year-old singer earned a bachelor’s degree in theater from Fisk University and a master’s degree in education from Trevecca Nazarene University.

According to her website, Shonka planned to release her first full album, “The Lady Sings the Blues”, soon.

Throughout her career she has toured internationally with many artists including Jamie Liddell and The Royal Pharaohs. She had also been featured as a background vocalist with numerous artists, including Nick Cave, Mike Farris and Christopher Roberts, among others.

She lived alone in her house with her two children and her net worth was $5 million.
