I regularly encourage people to use Linux, and whenever I give them a reason to change, I always mention that if they are “afraid of Linux” they can use Windows and Linux together. One way to use the two systems together is to dub Windows and Linux. It works fine, except you have to switch between operating systems by restarting the system. This is a minor inconvenience.
If, like me, you are a weird Windows user and don’t want to mess around with dual booting Ubuntu and Windows 10, I suggest you install Windows 10 on Linux by creating a virtual machine. In a previous tutorial I showed you how to install VMWare on Ubuntu, but in this one we are using Oracle VirtualBox to create virtual machines and install Windows 10 on them.
Download and install VirtualBox
First, download and install VirtualBox from the VirtualBox wiki. The software is free to download and is available for non-commercial use. Once the .exe file has downloaded, click on it and follow the onscreen instructions to successfully install it on your system.
Optional step: Download and install the VirtualBox expansion pack from the VirtualBox download page. You can skip this step, but its installation may improve and add additional functionality to your VirtualBox machine. Through this package, you can get features like mouse integration, internet connectivity, USB support and other cool features. You can install the package by clicking on the downloaded file and following the instructions.
Download Windows 11 Enterprise Virtual Machine
Next, download a copy of the Windows 11 installation files in OVA format. You can get these files from the Microsoft Virtual Machines downloads page. Make sure to download the virtual disk image for VirtualBox.
Import OVA files
Open and extract the downloaded files. Then double-click on the extracted file to open it. Your VirtualBox and Import Virtual Device dialog box will open automatically. Here you can change the settings and location of the machine’s home folder. Make sure you check the box that says Import hard drives as VDI. If you are happy with the settings, click Import.
Wait for the virtual machine to load in your VirtualBox. With this done, you can now open and use the Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine.
Common issues encountered when opening Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine in VirtualBox
You have finally installed the Windows 11 development environment on your VirtualBox. But unfortunately, you cannot open the virtual machine and run the operating system. It can be frustrating, especially after you’ve followed the steps mentioned above correctly.
But don’t worry, we have listed below the common issues you face when opening Windows 11 Enterprise VM in VirtualBox and how to fix them.
Failed to log on for a virtual machine error
If you come across an error saying “Cannot activate nested VT-x / AMD-V without nested paging and unlimited guest execution!”, It is very likely that your Hyper-V, a native virtual machine on your Windows 10 system , or activated. In some cases, disabling will work. Here is how to fix this problem:
- Press Win + S to open Windows search bar, type cmd, then right click on the command prompt search result and select Run as administrator.
- At the command prompt, type bcdedit / set hyperviso rlaunch type off and press Enter. Close this window.
- Then deactivate the Windows “Virtual Machine Platform” feature. To do this, press Win + S to open Windows Search. Type Windows Functionality and press Enter. Now find the Virtual Machine Platform option and make sure there is no check mark next to it. Restart your computer.
- After restarting your computer, open VirtualBox and the Windows 11 Enterprise virtual machine. Your machine should be functioning normally now.
UEFI Interactive Shell opens instead of starting Windows 11
Another issue that you may face while opening this virtual machine is getting the UEFI interactive shell window instead of booting the system. Do not worry; there is nothing wrong with the machine you have installed. You may have accidentally enabled EFI settings on your machine. To resolve this issue, follow the steps below:
- Select the Windows 11 virtual machine and click the Settings icon.
- Go to the system settings located on the left side panel and uncheck the box next to Enable EFI (special operating systems only). Click on OK.
- Restart your virtual machine. This will start your Windows 11 Enterprise system.
