Getting yourself a torch in Elden Ring is one of the first things you’ll want to do, as it will help light up caves that may contain valuable loot or bosses that will reward you handsomely for beating. In this guide we will explain how to get the torch and light the caves of elden ringas well as how to get the lantern and what is worth buying extra runes.
Get a torch in Elden Ring
You can buy a torch from Kale, the merchant at Elleh Church, for 200 runes. This is one of the first places you will visit when leaving the tutorial area.
Once you have purchased the torch, you will not need to purchase it again. It doesn’t drain or deplete, so you can just equip it from your inventory whenever you explore a dark cave or other similar areas.
Use the torch to light up the caves of Elden Ring
- Open the menu and select “Equipment”
This is done by pressing the “Options” button on PlayStation or the Menu button on Xbox and then selecting “Equipment”.
- Select one of the first three slots in the top two rows in the upper left corner of the screen.
These are your “cocking” slots for your right hand and your left hand.
- Select the torch and press X/A to confirm that you want to equip it.
- Press left on the d-pad if you have it equipped on one of your left weapon slots to equip your torch, or right on the d-pad if you have it equipped on one of your right cocking slots.
Just like that, you are ready to use your torch in Elden Ring. This is one of the most useful items for exploring the world, but if you find needing to equip it on one of your weapon slots impractical, there is a more expensive alternative but superior.
Obtain a lantern in Elden Ring
You can purchase a lantern from the Nomad Merchant at the Lake Liurnia shore site, shown on the map below.
The Lantern costs 1800 Runes and can be passively wornwhich means you’ll strap it to your waist, allowing you to keep your hands free for your shield and/or weapons.
The Lantern can be equipped in one of the “Quick Item” slots at the bottom of your “Equipment” screen, as shown below.
Then when you want to use the lantern, just select it with the down d-pad menu and you’re good to go.
Just like that, you’re ready to start exploring the various caves in The Lands Between with either the cheaper torch or the more expensive but slightly more useful lantern in Elden Ring.
