About Crossplay

Unfortunately, there is no cross-play or cross-save in Monster Hunter Rise between Nintendo Switch and PC.

Gathering Hub vs Village Quests (Multiplayer Scaling)

Multiplayer Gathering Hub quests are more difficult than Village Quests, although the difficulty scales dynamically based on the number of Hunters participating in a quest.

Can you play village quests in multiplayer?

The short answer: No, you cannot play Village Quests with other people. These are single player only.

There are no tutorial missions in multiplayer either, so we’d recommend starting with the village key quests – which are much easier and include tutorials – before moving on to the Gathering Hub. Unless you are already a Monster Hunter veteran or have someone to play with who is already knowledgeable!

How to play with friends

To play online on Nintendo Switch, you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership. You don’t need any additional subscriptions to play online on a PC (Steam), of course. The method for playing online on Switch or PC is the same – Monster Hunter Rise will draw from your Nintendo Switch friends list or your Steam friends list. Here’s how to join a friend’s quest in Monster Hunter Rise.

What are lobbies?

A “Lobby” in Monster Hunter Rise is a multiplayer session in which up to 4 people can participate. In a lobby, Hunters can go about their business in Kamura Village and even do their own village quests solo.

The method for playing with friends is generally the same whether you are playing locally or online:

  1. Talk to Senri the postman – it’s the Palico just across from the village quest counter!
  2. Choose Play locally or Play online
  3. Create a lobby – If you are online or in a public place, set an access code if you want to play with specific people. Otherwise, anyone can register.
  4. Your friends just have to check their friends list, choose you and “Show lobby information” to join your lobby.

After creating an online lobby, send an invite to a friend on your friends list to let them know you can play. However, they will still need to join your lobby with the method described above.

Playing with friends will earn you free items that will help you in multiplayer, like Lifepowders, Armor Powder, and more.

How to join a quest

Once you are in a lobby with friends, one of you will need to post a quest while the others will need to join it.

To post a multiplayer quest, go to the Gathering Hub and talk to Minoto at the Quest Counter and choose a quest. Hinoa’s quests, which is outside, cannot be joined by other players.

To join a quest once it is published, interact with the quest board to the right of Minoto in the Gathering Hub. Additionally, the quest board is available in your quick access menu at the bottom right of the screen – bring it up to join a quest from anywhere in the village!

Once you’ve joined a quest, make sure you’re “ready” (press ZR on the Switch). Then when the quest poster starts the quest, the whole party will go with them. If they accidentally start the quest without everyone else, others can still join once the poster loads into the quest.

How to Play Randoms Online

There are two ways to join random players in Monster Hunter Rise. These methods are the same on Nintendo Switch and PC.

Join an online lobby

  1. Talk to Senri the postman – it’s the Palico just across from the village quest counter!
  2. Choose Play Online
  3. Create a room and leave it open, or choose Find a room to join one that someone has already created.
  4. You will need to follow the same “How to join a quest” instructions above to create or join a quest.

Send friend requests from Monster Hunter Rise: If you’re playing with someone you like, add them to your Nintendo Switch or Steam friends list from within Rise! When you’re in a lobby with someone, open the Multiplayer tab in your menu. Look at the list of players. From there, you can view their Nintendo Switch profile and send a friend request.

Respond to a membership request – Choose a specific quest!

Respond to a membership request to join a specific quest with other people! Simply bring up the quest board with the D-Pad, choose Respond to Join Request, and choose the quest you want to do. You will join a quest in progress.

You can also post your own Hub Quest and open it up for others to join by posting a quest to the Hub Quest Counter and choosing “Accept via Join Request”. Then other people can join your quest while you’re on it (so yes, you have to start the quest – players won’t join your lobby this way).

How to use voice chat

Built-in voice chat for Monster Hunter RIse is only available on PC. For the Switch version, you’ll need to use a third-party service like Discord. On Steam, voice chat should work automatically in both lobbies with friends and quests with randoms as long as you have a compatible microphone connected to your computer.

How Hunter Connects works

A Hunter Connect is basically a way to easily organize a group of people, like squads were in Monster Hunter World.

advertising

How to create or join a Hunter Connect: Create a Hunter Connect by looking at the Multiplayer tab in your main menu and choosing Hunter Connect. From there, choose Join Invited Connect to join someone else’s group or Create New Connect to create your own.

Invitations to Hunter Connects do not appear on screen – you need to access the menu using the method above to accept invitations, automatic or otherwise.

About automatic invitations: If auto-invite is enabled, anyone who joins a room you’re also in will be able to join your Hunter Connect, and any other Hunter Connect you’re a part of that has auto-invites enabled!

To invite specific people: To invite only specific people, disable automatic invitation. Then, when someone is in your room, open the Hunter Connect menu, choose a Hunter Connect, then “Invite to Connect”.

How to use Hunter Connects: Now that you have created or joined a Hunter Connect, speak with Senri the postman, choose “play online” then “Hunter Connect”. Create an online lobby with the Hunter Connect of your choice – if someone else has already created a lobby with your Hunter Connect settings, you can join them from here!

Hunter Connect is the easiest way to organize a group of friends. If you are all part of the same Hunter Connect and make a habit of creating a Hunter Connect lobby, everyone in that group can easily join without having to coordinate with specific people. Everyone just has to use it! Multiple lobbies can also be created under the same Hunter Connect.

The similar system

At the end of a quest, you can send “Likes” to the hunters you played with. You can send a Like to each of them by pressing the corresponding direction on a D-Pad.

You can see a list of mutual likes by talking to Senri the postman, and you can join an online lobby of a mutual like if they leave it open. Mutual likes can also join your own open online lobby.
