Disney CUP Oswald The Rabbit Series after production of the first episode

Oswald The Lucky Rabbit is perhaps Walt Disney’s most infamous character.

Oswald was originally created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures in 1927. It would be used in an animated film, but eventually Disney and Iwerks abandoned the project and ultimately created Mickey Mouse as Oswald’s replacement. .

Universal Pictures continued to use Oswald in several images throughout the 1930s before the character fell into oblivion never to be seen again. That is, until 2006, when the Walt Disney Company, led by former CEO Bob Iger, bought out the characters – including Oswald – that Disney had created.

Oswald would go on to make an appearance in the Epic Mickey video game where he was the title villain and now has his own line of collectibles and has even met guests at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

Being replaced by Mickey Mouse, many Disney fans wanted the company to give Oswald his due and create an animated series just for him.

Unfortunately, they may have to wait a bit longer for this to happen.

Matt Danner, who has been an integral part of several Disney projects over the years, recently revealed on social media that Iger is serious about creating an Oswald show for streaming.

Iger was very serious about this. The Legend of the Three Caballeros team would follow up with an Oswald steam show. Scenarios written, designs made, animation test in hand and pilot in production. It was beautiful! Then we parted and dispersed to the wind.

After the scripts were written and a pilot went into production, Oswald’s planned show fell into oblivion, similar to what we saw with the character almost a century ago.

Danner also went on to say that just because his version of the Oswald show was canceled doesn’t mean there won’t be a Walt Disney Animated Studios series featuring the character in the future.

Hey gang! Don’t be sad about it. Oswald has a LOT of love within Disney. I just wanted to share how serious this love is. I’m sure there will be an Oswald project coming up in the near future.

A lot of people jump to conclusions here. No one is saying that there is no Oswald content in development. Just to say that the MY TEAM’S version has not been in development for a few years. I wanted to share how passionate and serious the folks at Disney and I are about Oswald.

For those who don’t know, here is the background for Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, according to Disney Wiki:

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (or simply Oswald) is an animated character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures. First appearing in the short film Trolley Troubles on September 5, 1927, Oswald is distinguished by his ability to disassemble and reshape parts of his body at will. He is credited with pioneering “personality animation,” which refers to cartoon characters displaying identifiable emotion. In Oswald’s case, he was often portrayed as haughty, fiery, and overzealous, which usually led to some comedic misadventures that put the Rabbit’s luck to the test. .

Due to a financial fallout with producer Charles Mintz, Disney dropped the Oswald series alongside Iwerks and a few other loyalists. Together, the remaining team would independently create Mickey Mouse, Oswald’s successor. Oswald would stay with Universal and continued to appear in short films until 1938 before fading into obscurity. In 2006, The Walt Disney Company would acquire ownership of Oswald and Disney cartoons. The character would experience a resurgence thereafter, starting with the 2010 Epic Mickey video game, which portrayed Oswald as a long-forgotten actor with a vendetta against Mickey. Since then, Oswald has appeared in merchandise, theme parks, and various animation projects.

There is certainly potential around a series of animated feature films from Oswald The Lucky Rabbit and the other cartoons from the Walt Disney Archives, but it’s something that Disney might consider in the future, but for the sake of it. now, it looks like fans will have to wait.
